In staff notation, note stems can point either upward or downward depending on
where they appear on the staff. When a note is on or above the third line of the
staff, the stem will be directed downward from the left side of the note head as
shown in the Figure 3.7.

When a note is below the third line of the staff, the stem will be directed upward
from the right side of the note head, as shown in Figure 3.8.
