Accidentals
Accidentals are signs that can raise or lower the pitch of a note in staff notation.
These signs appear before a particular note on the staff. At this level, you will learn
two common types of accidentals, namely sharp and flat signs.
A sharp sign (♯)
This is a musical sign which indicates that the pitch of a particular note is raised
by a half step or semitone. In staff notation, a sharp sign is placed before a note
as shown in Figure 3.15.

When letters are used in writing the note names, a sharp sign is placed after the
letter. For example, F♯, G♯, A♯ and others. On a piano keyboard, a black key can
be named with a sharp while using the letter name of a white key on its left side.
