of a piano. In other words, these notes are said to be enharmonically equivalent.
Figure 3.19 shows an example of enharmonic notes on a piano keyboard.

Exercise 3.2
1. Draw a bass staff in two-four time with 4 bars. In each bar, allocate two
crotchets of the following pitches. You can choose to allocate the notes
in lower or higher pitches:
(a) A flat and C sharp (First bar)
(b) D flat and G flat (Second bar)
(c) F sharp and B flat (Third bar)
(d) E flat and G sharp (Fourth bar)
2. In the following staff, circle a note that is higher than the other in each
individual bar.
3. In the following staff, circle a note that is lower than the other in each bar

Scales and key signatures
Scales
A scale is an arrangement of musical notes or sounds in a particular order. It can
be arranged in upward or downward direction. The upward movement is called
“ascending” while the downward movement is called “descending”. There are
many types of musical scales but, at this level, you will learn the major scales on
the keys of C, G, F and D.
