              Clefs
A clef is a musical symbol that indicates pitches of notes on a particular staff. It
specifies notes represented by lines and spaces on a staff. A clef is the first symbol
that appears at the beginning of the musical staff. There are various types of clefs
but, at this level, you will learn two common types. These are treble and bass clefs.

              Treble clef
The word “treble” means the high tones or part in music for instruments or voices.
A treble clef is a musical symbol used in written music to indicate the range of
higher-pitched notes to be played or sung. It is also known as “G clef” since its
loop circles the second line on the staff, which represents note G. A staff which
has the treble clef is known as treble staff or G staff. The music for voices and
instruments with higher ranges is written on the treble staff. Figure 3.9 shows an
example of a treble clef written on the staff.
