(ii) Step 2: Count the steps between notes by following the pattern for constructing
major scales ( T-T-S-T-T-T-S) as follows:
(a) From G to A = Tone (T)
(b) From A to B = Tone (T)
(c) From B to C = Semitone (S)
(d) From C to D = Tone (T)
(e) From D to E = Tone (T)
(f) From E to F = Semitone (S); but, since the pattern for major scale requires
you to count a whole step or tone (T), you have to increase the distance
between E and F. This can be done by raising note F using a sharp (♯) sign
in order to get a whole step or tone. Therefore, you will count from E to
F♯ = Tone (T)
(g) From F♯ to G = Semitone (S)
The order of G major scale obtained is G-A-B-C-D-E-F♯-G. Figures 3.23 and
3.24 show the ascending G major scale constructed on a piano and treble staff.
