Music is considered a fundamental part of human life. In this chapter, you
will learn the meaning of music, different genres of music, elements of music,
functions of music in society, importance of studying Music and relationship
between Music and other fields of study. The competencies developed will
enable you to appreciate the role of music in improving intellectual abilities
as well as in representing different culture and traditions.

Meaning of music
Music is made up of various sounds. Sounds are almost everywhere. However,
not every sound we hear is music. When vibrations quickly travel through the air,
they create sound waves. When sound waves get to the ear, they make the eardrum
vibrate and through the auditory nerve, the brain interprets the waves as sound.
Figures 1.1 (a) and (b) show examples of places where various sounds are produced.
