Note that, elements of music can evoke different emotions in people. For
example, soft and slow music usually makes people feel calm while loud
and fast music makes people feel alive.

Listen to various songs and describe how various elements of music are used.
Functions of music in society
Music has different functions in society. It has become an important part of society
as it accompanies daily activities. The following are some of the functions of
music in society:
(a) Communication: In most societies, musicians use songs to communicate
messages to the community. The messages usually address issues related to
a variety of social, political, cultural and economic aspects. For example,
musicians use songs to air out their voices against corruption, inhuman
practices, unequal sharing of resources, gender inequality and others.
(b) A means of teaching and learning: Through music, people can teach and
learn various aspects of society. For example, songs are used to teach
historical events, geographical features, mathematical concepts, language
and other issues. Learning through music helps students to easily recall the
contents taught in class. It is for this reason that songs are preferably used
in early childhood education.
(c) Entertainment: Music is considered as a form of entertainment as people
get enjoyment and overcome stress through dancing, singing, listening to
songs or watching musical performances.
(d) A means of directing people to obey certain social and cultural norms:
The messages created and released through music can influence society to
obey culture and moral values. For example, music may carry messages
that teach proper behavior and patriotism.
(e) Expression of cultural identity: Music is one of the symbols used to identify
a particular society by reflecting and revealing some of the traditional
values of that society. Cultural elements such as language, dance styles,
