Physics
There are several concepts that Music and Physics share. Physics explains how
frequencies of vibration can result in sound production. Also, the knowledge of
Physics is used in the process of designing and producing a variety of musical
instruments, such as pianos, guitars, saxophones and others. Musicians have always
been applying the principles of physics in playing various musical instruments as
well as controlling or manipulating different sound waves in music production.
Biology
Biology explains how various systems of the human body function, including the
process of voice production. Musicians, especially singers, apply the biological
knowledge in voice production when singing. For instance, singers normally
observe body postures, foods and drinks and other body habits that may affect
voice production. Also, students at lower levels of education, particularly
pre-primary and primary schools, learn different parts of the body through songs.
Geography
Music and Geography are also interdependent when it comes to developing
particular competencies in students. Musicians use the ideas related to various
natural phenomena in composing songs. Therefore, by using songs, students
can easily identify several geographical features in their localities. For example,
these are songs about national parks like Serengeti, Ngorongoro as well as songs
about Mount Kilimanjaro the highest mountain in Africa.
Language studies
Music is an effective tool for teaching language. For example, in pre-primary and
primary education, children are guided to develop skills for listening, speaking,
reading and writing through songs. For example, children can learn alphabets and
words through songs.
Activity 1.5
In movies and films, background music plays an important role in making
certain scenes more emotional. Watch a short scene of any movie or film with
background music and describe the feelings which the music has aroused in
you.
