Musical sounds are vibrations which are systematic. For a sound to be music, it
must be creatively organised in time. Therefore, music can be referred to as the
form of art that uses human voices or instrumental sounds or both, organised in
time, to express emotions and convey specific messages to a particular community.
Activity 1.1
Listen to various sounds. Identify and name the sources of the sounds. Decide
which sounds are music and which are not.
Music genres
A music genre is a group of different styles of music that have common features.
Different music can be grouped together to form a music genre. They can be
grouped based on their similarities in performance styles, performance techniques
or historical background. There are many genres of music in the world. Table 1.1
shows examples of some popular music genres in Tanzania and other parts of the
world.
