Chapter
Six Musical performances
Introduction
Learning music is not only about knowing how to read, write and analyse
the music. It is also about being able to perform the music. People usually
have different interests in musical performances. Some are interested in
singing, and others in playing instruments. In this chapter, you will learn the
concepts and techniques of singing and playing ngoma individually and in
groups. The competencies developed will enable you to sing simple melodies
and play simple rhythms on ngoma, for individual and group performances.

Concept of singing
Singing is the act of making musical sounds using the human voice to communicate,
entertain and express emotions. It is one of the most common and universal means
of human expression found in different societies. Singing can be performed solo
or in an ensemble.
Solo singing
This involves a singing performance given by a single person. It is a musical
performance in which one person is given special attention. In most cases,
solo singers are accompanied by backup vocalists and instrumentalists during
performances. Sometimes, a solo singer can also be accompanied by dancers.
