(e) Sanitation
This refers to the cleaning and disinfecting of animals, equipment, personnel
working with livestock and materials entering a farm for the purpose of diseases
and parasites prevention. It is very important to restrict movement of people and
vehicles entering the farm/units by using a footbath properly. A number of diseases
can be controlled by observing hygiene, for example, cleaning houses and equipment
using disinfectants. Proper carcass disposal helps to control calf scour and mastitis
in dairy cows.
(f) Proper nutrition
Proper feeding of livestock with adequate feeds in terms of quality and quantity
helps to prevent nutritional deficiency diseases like milk fever, avitaminosis and
general unthriftness.
The curative approach in livestock health management
(a) Treatment of sick animals by application of drugs and chemicals in curing
infectious diseases such as mastitis and pneumonia helps to cure the animal and
prevent the spread of such diseases.
(b) Deworming by drenching or injection helps to control internal parasites that
may cause diseases.
