(c) Produce a marketable product
Ensure the fish to be sold have the right size and quality for the market. In Tanzania,
the size of the fish should be at least 200 gm, but inquire with the buyer on what size
they prefer. Good growth and quality can be obtained by following the management
practices you have already learnt in previous sections.
(d) Be part of outgrowers schemes
A way to ensure there is a market for the fish is to participate in out-grower schemes
where seed and feed are usually provided by the private sector and the fish are
bought back from the farmer by the same company.
Activity 12.1
1. In groups, discuss the necessary conditions in maintaining a fish pond.
2. Prepare a fish farming management plan by highlighting key points based on
suitable fish culture to raise, site selection and construction of rearing facility,
stocking, feeding, water management, maintenance of rearing facility, harvesting
and post-harvest handling/processing as well as marketing.
3. Visit a nearby fish enterprise or shop and observe the methods of processing and
preserving fish.
4. Record your observations and share them in class.
