          Production of oil crops
Oil crops are the crops whose seeds or fruits are processed to produce oil. They
include both annual (usually called oilseeds) and perennial crops whose seeds,
fruits, and nuts are valued mainly for the edible or industrial oils that are extracted
from them. In the case of some oil crops, both the pulp of the fruit and the kernels
are used for oil. The major oil crops include sunflower, safflower, sesame, oil palm
and olive. Crops such as groundnut, soya bean, coconut, castor, cotton and kapok
can produce oil, however, they are not primarily grown for oil. While the best-
known application of oil crops is in the production of edible oils, they can also
produce inedible oils and even biofuels. Figures 1.79 to 1.82 show some oil crops
          commonly grown in Tanzania.
