require relatively less water and are drought tolerant. Vegetative propagation is one
of the common agronomic practices of starchy root and tuber crops, for example,
round potatoes and aerial yams (propagated by tubers), cassava (propagated by stem
cuttings), sweet potatoes and underground yams (propagated by vine cuttings), taro
and cocoyam (propagated by side shoots, corm heads or stolons). You can find out
more about ecological and agronomic requirements of these crops from various
sources of information you have already learnt. These sources of information include
the ‘Mwongozo wa uzalishaji mazao kulingana na kanda za kilimo za kiikolojia
(2022)’, your teacher, extension workers and other agricultural experts in your
area. Other sources of information about ecological and agronomic requirements
can be the production guide of individual starchy root and tuber crop from various
literatures. Moreover, farming of starchy root and tuber crops has to adhere to the
general principles of crop production you have already learnt.
Activity 1.3
In groups, perform the following tasks:
1. Discuss the importance of at least one starchy root/tuber crop that is common
in your area, by comparing it to the same root/tuber crop grown in and outside
Tanzania. Consider the products and uses of the crop.
2. Find out the available entrepreneurial opportunities which you can utilise for
generating profitable income from that crop.
3. Record all findings you have made in your portfolio.
4. Outline the lessons you have learnt from this activity.
5. Summarise your responses and present them in class.
Activity 1.4
1. Using your school farm, with the assistance of your teacher and in groups,
prepare to raise at least one of the horticultural, oil and starchy root/tuber crops
recommended in your area by accomplishing the given tasks. For each task,
state why you did it in that way. Record all your tasks’ proceedings in portfolio.
You should also plan, assess and evaluate your tasks periodically.
(a) Set goals and yield targets for producing a horticultural, starchy root/tuber
and an oil crop of your choice.
(b) Choose a suitable variety of the crop for your area.
(c) Identify all the requirements for raising each of the crops including land,
labour, capital resources and inputs.
