Editing and proofreading
Introduction
Producing a coherent, concise, and well-presented piece of work is challenging
for many writers. In this chapter, you will familiarise yourself with the
principles, methods, steps of editing and proofreading, as well as grammar,
punctuation, vocabulary, and sentence structure rules. You will also edit
and proofread various texts. The competencies developed will enable you to
produce standard written texts.
Think about:
the challenge of reading a written work that is neither edited nor proofread.
Activity 1 Describing the basic principles of editing and proofreading
(a) Read the following conversation between Maswi and Mwasimba. Maswi is a
language enthusiast who is passionate about editing and proofreading. On the
other hand, Mwasimba is an experienced editor with a background in linguistics.
Maswi: So, Mwasimba, I’ve been intrigued by the art of editing and
proofreading lately. I’ve heard that there are several principles
guiding the process. Can you shed some light on that?
Mwasimba: Absolutely, Maswi. Editing and proofreading are fascinating
skills. Various key principles guide these skills. Firstly, there is a
principle of accuracy.
