Editing and proofreading are guided by some principles. These principles are
the fundamental guidelines and considerations that editors adhere to when
dealing with print media, academic, business and translated documents. These
principles help to ensure the document’s accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness
in conveying the meaning and intent of the text.
Activity 2 Describing the main steps of editing and proofreading
Read the following scenario and answer the questions that follow.
Mariam is a Master’s student at a renowned university in Fusland. One of the
requirements for a degree award is the submission of a disertation. Having collected
the data, Mariam wrote and submitted a report to her supervisor for comments and
improvement. However, after turning a few pages, the supervisor became visibly
disappointed. Mariam had neither edited nor proofread her work. The supervisor
reprimanded her for not editing and proofreading her work before submission.
