The first part of the book talks about the importance of literature, and the second
part is about how to analyse a literary text. Solea found that:
              (i) Literature is a way of experiencing life, time, culture, emotion, deed, and event

that you are not otherwise able, willing, or capable of encountering in any
other manner. Thus, it opens doors to new and different life experiences.
(ii) The critical reading skills that you bring to the reading of literary works can
serve you well in reading any other types of written materials.

(iii) The ability to write about literature demonstrates your ability to read critically
and engage in the higher-level thinking skills of analysing and interpreting a
                   literary text.
(iv) The ability to construct a reasonable argument supported by literary evidence
and logic is essential to many other types of expository writing tasks. This

skill builds your ability to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively.

About analysing a literary work critically, Solea found that the following points

              would be helpful:
              (i) Read through the work for the first time to understand the plot, the characters,
and the general idea or the meaning of the piece.
(ii) During the second reading, pay attention to word choice and the words which
challenge you and look for their meanings and pronunciation in the dictionary.
If a word has multiple meanings, consider each of the meanings. Remember
that poems are often short; poets select their words very carefully, and every
word in a poem contributes to its meaning.
(iii) Think about the setting of the work and the culture it depicts.
(iv) During subsequent readings, pay attention to how characters interact with one
another. What are they doing to themselves or others? What are they saying
or thinking about themselves or others? How do they speak? Also, consider
how the writer uses words to convey meaning and who tells (or narrates) the
story. Think about the kinds of images the writer uses or any other aspects
of the text that seem important to you. Think about each aspect and why you
                   think it is important.
              (v) Give your views about the work and support those views with evidence from
the text and your reasoning. The focus of literary analysis is on interpreting a

text by supporting that interpretation with evidence from the text.
