DEVELOPMENT
A man of the people Tougher than fighting
Enters his office A wounded buffalo
to sit on the throne With a pocket knife;
of Party and State I plead underdevelopment
His stick of power Stronger than the blows of the sea
Across the table. When the hurricane is at
the height, I plead fighting
He looks into the files underdevelopment
To see the demands Tougher than combating
Of the millions of people colonialism;
Who for years since Uhuru I see that it’s more difficult
Have just managed to survive To maintain peace
Than to stop a coup d’état
They ring out one message
Man of the people I plead the cry
You have always been telling us Of the nation
What we need… More painful than the yell
Health centres, Of a woman
More schools, As her husband dies of sickness;
Clean water, It`s more painful than the screams
Better transport facilities, Of a man
Better living conditions. Dying in agony
In the coils of the greatest python
Do you plead incapable Found in the African forest.
To bring about development?
How is development
I declare running To be brought brother
Better than walking When the people to whom
For a young and poor country; We have entrusted power
I plead fighting underdevelopment Are corrupt?
