Contexts in literature
Introduction
In literature, contexts and circumstances form a background that influences a
literary work’s style, structure, meaning and importance to the audience. In this
chapter, you will assess the socio-political, cultural and economic background of
selected poems and plays. You will also examine issues portrayed in the texts and
relate them to real-life experiences. The competencies developed will enhance
your literary interpretation skills, deepen your understanding of the complexities
of human survival in a constantly changing world and strengthen your creative
abilities.

Literature is the representation of real-world phenomena or human experiences.
Writers draw from communal experiences to infuse their work with socio-
political, economic and cultural issues of the time they write. When reading
a literary text, you may encounter issues such as bullying, violence, poverty,
