Aesthetics and values in literature
Introduction
In literature, aesthetics and values are often seen as two sides of the same
coin. Aesthetics refer to the principles and qualities that describe the beauty,
emotional resonance and artistic merit of a literary work. Values, on the other
hand, encompass the beliefs, ideals, and moral principles that shape the themes,
characters and messages within a piece of literature. In this chapter, you will
examine the language used in selected poems and plays and reflect on how
your own values and perspectives compare with those presented in the texts.
The competencies developed will enhance your literary analysis skills, deepen
your understanding of human experiences and expression, and foster empathy,
insight and intellectual growth.
Think about:
differences between reading a story written using ordinary language versus a
story written using creative language.
