In plays, especially the classical ones, the male protagonist is also referred to
as a hero, while the female protagonist is a heroine. The hero or heroine is
the principal character or leading character around which the story is framed.
The hero/heroine is always against an antagonist who is also called a villain. A
villain is thus the principal opponent of the protagonist.
(h) Read a selected play and answer the following questions.
1. What is the main theme of the story?
2. What are the minor themes in the story?
3. What are the conflicts represented in the story?
4. What are the causes of conflict in the story?
5. What lesson did you learn from the story?
6. How are characters important in advancing themes and conflict of the
selected play?
7. What do you think is the philosophy of the author? Give reasons.
Revision
1. Explain how the title of a play you read helped you to understand the message(s)
the writer wanted to convey.
2. Use one poem to examine how different kinds of figures of speech create
beauty and enhance meaning.
3. Use one play to assess different roles characters play to advance and resolve
conflicts.
4. Explain different forms and causes of conflict portrayed in one play you have
read.
5. When one reads a literary work, one comes across characters with positive or
negative actions. This encounter plays a great role in choosing the character
we would like to identify with. Using one play read in class, select a character
you identify with. Give reasons.
6. Plays are shaped by the given society’s economic, social, political and cultural
aspects. Substantiate this statement using two plays read in class.
