At the edge of the town stood an old building, once a beautiful structure but
now bearing the marks of age. It was large, with tall walls that seemed to
stretch toward the sky, though parts of it had deteriorated over the years. The
roof had small holes, allowing rain to drip through, and the cracked windows

let in the cold breeze. The faded paint on the walls was peeling, giving the
building a shabby appearance. Nevertheless, despite all these signs of decay,
some people still found the building to possess a certain charm, believing it
held memories of a time long past. Others, however, regarded it as a place
that needed repair, requiring significant effort to restore its former glory.

                   Activity 3 Paraphrasing texts

              (a) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

                                               Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is a crucial skill that enhances comprehension and vocabulary.
              Paraphrasing effectively requires a clear understanding of the original text’s meaning;
therefore, it is important to read carefully to grasp the main idea. It involves the use
              of specific techniques and principles.

One important technique is using synonyms and alternative phrases while maintaining
the original meaning. For example, instead of saying “The weather is very hot today,”
one could say “The temperature is extremely warm today.” Additionally, changing

the sentence structure by rewriting it differently while preserving its meaning is
effective. For instance, “She quickly ran to the market” could be paraphrased as
              “She rushed to the market.”

Another useful technique is changing parts of speech. Nouns can be turned into
verbs, adjectives into adverbs, and vice versa. For example, instead of saying “His
