(b) Double folded hem: (iii) Neatly sew the hem into position
This is a common and simple technique using a machine or a hand.
used to finish the lower area of a
garment such as a pair of trousers and
a skirt. This type of hem can be used
on any fabric of any width and can
be finished by machine or a hand. The
twice folding of the edge conceals the
raw edge in order to prevent it from
fraying.
Machine hemming
Procedures for working on double folded
hem
(i) Mark out the hem level, say 2 cm,
and fold to this point. Use an iron for
heavy fabrics and make use of hem
gauge or measuring card or ruler to
get an even hem.
Hand hemming
(c) A basic machine hem: This is the
simplest and easiest type of hem to
make. You can either fold under the
raw edge of the hem or overlock it and
then machine stitch it all into place.
This technique is suitable to a wide
variety of fabrics such as cotton, linen,
