Table 9. 1: Suitable colours for different figure types
Figure type Suitable colour
Short plump figure (i) Opt for cool colours as they make a plump person look
smaller
(ii) Dark or medium colour in one outfit makes the figure look
tall and slim
Tall slim figure (i) Bright or light colours make a person look bigger
(ii) Warm and white colour makes a person look bigger
Example red and white colour
(iii) Choose contrasting colours to balance the proportions of
the body. Contrasting colours such as red and blue make
a person look shorter.
Large bust and hip (i) Choose dark colours such as dark blue and green
with narrow waist
(ii) Wear darker colours such as black colour belt around the
waist area.
(iii) Cool colours make the figure look smaller
Small bust and (i) Choose bright colour on the upper body and use eye-
shoulder with large catching prints, textures and details strategically to create
hips interest on top.
(ii) Avoid details, patterns, pockets on the thigh and hip area
and belts on the waist
Large bust, narrow (i) Choose bright colours on your lower body as they draw
hips and a full attention away from the midsection.
