Textiles and Garment Construction

Weather condition. Keeping the body too hot or cold or wet is not recommended. Therefore,
it is important to wear a garment that will make you feel comfortable. Wearing heavy clothes
with multiple layers that covers the whole body is suitable in cold weather conditions.
Figure type of the wearer: The proper garment style choice may change the way the body
figure appears. Some of the fabrics will make a person look heavier while others will make
a person look thinner. It is recommended to find the type of fabric that drapes well over the
body shape. Fabrics that have a stiff texture or are heavy with a shine surface will either
add bulkiness or draw attention to an area. Fabrics that flow and drape over the body shape
will create more vertical lines, draw viewer’s eyes up and down and make a person look
slimmer. The style that has gathers, pleats and pockets tend to add weight to the shape
while straight and draping fabrics with vertical cuts such as princess seams, asymmetrical
and A-line styles make the person look slimmer. Table 9.2 indicates suitable styles for
           different figure types.

                           Figure type Suitable style

Tall slim figure (i) Choose stiff fabrics that are medium
                                                          in weight, boldly patterned,
with horizontal lines as they add
                                                          width, fullness and drape well.
(ii) Skirts: choose a wide contrasting
                                                          waist belt, skirts, full pleated,
                                                          circular skirts with large patch
pockets and soft drapery as they
hide the angularity of the figure.

(iii) Sleeves: choose full gathered sleeves
as they add fullness around the
                                                          shoulder and make an individual
                                                          look wider around the shoulder.

                                                      (iv) Necklines: choose a garment
with a high neckline as it
                                                          emphasizes a long, swan-like neck.

                                                      (v) You should not wear narrow slinky
                                                          garments like narrow tubular skirts,
                                                          long tightly fitted sleeves, long
                                                          vertical lines and deep v-neckline
as these tend to add height and reduce
the width of an individual figure.
