the figure look proportionate.

colleagues then suggestsuitable

Lines
Lines are also referred to as stripes. Lines
are important in choosing the fabric type
for garment construction as they affect
the look of an individual. Lines divide
the body into shape and space. They give
direction or a feeling of movement to a
design while directing the eye from one
part of the body to another. Lines can also
emphasize a specific detail in a garment.
Lines can be straight or curved, straight
lines can also lie horizontally, vertically
or diagonally. Refer Figure 9.18.

Variations of lines in garments
Effect of lines on different figure
types: Lines create an illusion or
image that gives the desired effect on
figures. Illusions make things appear
quite different from what they are.
They emphasize, minimize, or camouflage
the individual figure. The vertical lines
create an illusion of height, horizontal
lines create an illusion of width and curved
lines an illusion of fullness. The design
of lines makes the viewers eyes’ follow a
certain direction that creates an illusion.
Changing line direction and location
can change its appearance and the size
of an area. The following are the effects
of lines on body figure’s appearance:
(i) Vertical lines tend to add height and
reduce the width. They make someone
look thin and tall. Vertical lines with
a round neckline make a neck appear
shorter. Vertical lines are suitable
make a person look taller and thinner.
