(c) The Sow urinates frequently;
(d) The vulva becomes red and swollen;
(e) Sometimes, whitish mucous discharges may come out of the vulva;
(f) The abdomen and mammary tissue protrude; and,
(g) The sow starts secreting milk from the teats.
Care of the sow and piglets during farrowing
Careful observation of the sow at farrowing is necessary to observe any
abnormalities that may lead to the death of piglets. If the sow is restless, remove
each piglet after it is born. Once the process is completed, return the piglets to the
sow. Usually, the piglets will start to suckle immediately after farrowing is over.
Activity 7.8
1. Inquire from experienced pig livestock keepers, library and internet searches
on the possible consequences that may happen if farrowing takes place in
absence of an attendant.
2. Summarise what you have learnt from this activity in your portfolio.
Feeding and feed formulation for pigs
Like other farm animals, pigs need the right feed to grow strong and healthy.
Pigs should be fed a balanced diet with energy-rich foods like grains, proteins
like soybean meal, and vitamins and minerals. Fresh, clean water should always
be available. Feeding should be done regularly, and the amount of food should
be adjusted as the pigs grow. Formulating a pig ration requires knowledge of the
nutritional needs of pigs at various stages of growth and the availability of feed
resources.
