(v) Marketing: Marketing is a crucial aspect of the pig production industry.
It involves product packaging attractively, setting competitive prices, and
promoting them to consumers. Farmers and processors may market their
products directly to consumers through local markets or supply retailers,
restaurants, or export markets.

However, in Tanzania, live pigs are the most commonly traded. Therefore, you
need to identify the market demands for piglets, live slaughter pigs, carcasses,
and processed products and develop your marketing channels. Work out the
most appropriate based on costs and profitability. Use social media and other
appropriate promotion channels.

3. Describe the characteristics you would look for when selecting a boar for
breeding.
4. Describe how to perform a routine health check on a pig.
5. In pig farming, stresses are inevitable and may have different sources. Analyse
some stresses that can be caused by:
(a) Poor feeding/nutrition;
(b) Poor housing;
(c) Poor sanitation; and
(d) Poor watering.
Record keeping in pig farming
Different types of records are kept on a pig farm. Important information includes
financial, feed, breeding, and stock (herd) records. For the sows, the following
details must be included: the number of days between weaning and oestrus,
weaning day, weaning to service interval, piglets born/litter size and weaned per
litter, weaning age/weight and litter number. Such information is necessary to
help identify managerial problems in the pig farm, accurately detect the signs of
heat, and schedule insemination or mating at the optimum time.
