Raising rabbits can be beneficial for several reasons, especially for young
farmers, families, and communities. The following are some relative advantages
            of keeping rabbits.
             (a) Source of high-quality meat: Rabbit meat is high in protein, low in fat,

and contains essential vitamins and minerals. It’s a healthy option for those
looking to maintain a balanced diet. Rabbit meat is one of the leanest meats
available, making it a good choice for those who want to eat healthy.

             (b) Income generation: There is a growing demand for rabbit meat in
many areas. Raising rabbits allows one to sell the meat to local markets,
restaurants, or directly to consumers, providing a steady source of income.
Rabbits require less space, food, and care than larger livestock, making them
an affordable option for small-scale farmers or those with limited resources.

             (c) Highly prolific: Rabbits have a short gestation period of about 30 days and
can produce large litters, which helps to increase the stock and productivity
quickly. Unlike other animals, rabbits can be bred yearly, providing a
                 consistent meat supply and income.

             (d) Easy to raise: Rabbits are relatively easy to care for. They don’t need much
space, and their diet mainly consists of hay, fresh greens, and pellets, some
of which are easy to provide. Rabbits can be raised in various environments,
including small backyards, making them suitable for rural and urban settings.

             (e) Educational value: Raising rabbits can be an excellent way for young people
to learn about responsibility, animal care, and essential farming practices. It’s
a hands-on experience that teaches necessary life skills. Caring for rabbits
can also be a practical introduction to biology and science, as it involves
understanding animal behaviour, nutrition, and reproduction.
             (f) Environmental benefits: Rabbits efficiently convert kitchen scraps and
garden waste into high-quality protein, reducing food waste. Rabbit manure
is an excellent natural fertiliser. It is rich in nutrients and can be used directly
in gardens to improve soil fertility and boost crop production. Rabbit urine
can also be used as a foliar fertiliser and insecticide for crop protection.
             (g) Fur production: In addition to meat, some rabbit breeds produce high-
quality fur that can be sold or used to make clothing and other products,
                 adding another revenue stream.

There are many breeds of rabbit kept worldwide. Rabbit breeds serve various
purposes, from meat to fur production. Other breeds are used as pets and show
