Abraham and Sarah before King Abimelech
Abraham journeyed toward the region of Negeb, and settled between Kadesh and
Shur. While residing in Gerar as an alien, Abraham said to his wife Sarah, “She is my
sister.” And King Abimelech took Sarah. But God came to Abimelech in a dream by
night and said to him, “You are about to die because of the woman you have taken,

for she is a married woman” (Genesis 20:2-3).
This story resembles that of Genesis 12:10-20, when Abraham lied to Egyptians that
Sarah was his sister. Abraham did so because he thought there was no fear of God
at all in that place.
Fortunately, God warned Abimelech not to go near Sarah. Now Abimelech had not
approached her. He gave her back to Abraham. Abimelech took sheep and oxen,
male and female slaves to Abraham. Then, Abraham prayed to God and God healed
Abimelech, his wife and f e m a l e slaves so that they bear children. For the
Lord had closed fast all the wombs of the house of King Abimelech because of Sarah,
Abraham’s wife. Figure 4.6 depicts Abraham and Sarah before king Abimelech.

The life history of Isaac
Sarah was barren until she was 90 years old. She bore a son and Abraham called
him Isaac. Abraham was a hundred (100) years old when his son Isaac was born.
Abraham circumcised Isaac on the 8 day. The name “Isaac” means laughter. God said
th
to Abraham that through Isaac offspring shall be named for him and his descendants.
Key points to note in the history of Isaac are: (a) Isaac was the son of promise and the
only Patriarch who lived in Canaan for his whole life, (b) Isaac was the second Patriarch
