Biology for Advanced Level Secondary Schools
Introduction
This is the first book in a series of two Teacher’s Guides on Biology
for Advanced Secondary Schools from Form Five to Form Six.
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
This guide is prepared specifically for Form Five. The guide has
been written to help the teacher to effectively guide students to use
their textbook, which is in line with the 2023 Biology Syllabus for
Advanced Secondary Education issued by the Ministry of Education,
Science and Technology. It is expected that the guide will help teacher
to facilitate the teaching and learning process in order to make the
student acquire the intended competences.
Furthermore, this guide will help teachers in facilitating the development
of the expected competences. The guide highlights student’s activities,
teaching and learning resources as well as teaching steps. In addition
to what is suggested in this guide, the teacher are advised to use
different ICT tools, real objects from your immediate environment
and to improvise the teaching and learning materials. This guide also
suggests teaching and learning methods for each activity. However,
the teacher is advised to plan and use other appropriate methods based
on the environment or context. The guide consists of seven chapters,
Cytology; Principles of classification; Comparative studies of natural
groups of organisms; Coordination and irritability; Nutrition; Gas
exchange and respiration, and Regulation (Homeostasis).
The Student’s Book contains illustrations, tasks, activities, exercises
and revision exercises that are intended to facilitate learning. To
make students actively participate in the learning process, you are
required to encourage students to perform all the activities and do all
the exercises in their textbook together with other assignments, which
will be given to them. Allow them to perform activities and attempt
exercises individually or in small groups to make them develop both
independent learning skills and teamwork behaviour and culture.
