Biology for Advanced Level Secondary Schools
1.3 Types of cells
Teaching steps
1. Guide students to search from the library and internet sources
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
about the information structure and organisation of prokaryotic
and eukaryotic cells. Ask them to note the main differences
between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
2. Guide students to observe video/images/charts/models of plant
and animal cells. Ask them to note what they have observed.
3. Guide students to discuss in groups the structure and function
of cell membrane and each cell organelle in plant and animal
cells. Guide them to present their work. Make clarification
where necessary.
4. Use Activity 1.1 from the Student’s Book to guide students to
explore the structure of a plant cell under the light microscope.
Then, ask them to:
(a) describe what they have observed.
(b) explain why some structures cannot be seen using light
microscope.
5. Use Activity 1.2 from the Student’s Book to guide students to
explore the structure of an animal cell under a light microscope.
Ask them to describe what they have observed.
6. Assign students to do Exercises1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8,
and 1.9 from Student’s Book. Mark the exercise and provide
feedback.
7. Use Activity 1.3 from the Student’s Book to guide students to
explore specialised root hair cell.
