                One                 Standard pronunciation


         FOR ONLINE READING ONLY





           Teaching standard pronunciation  enhances communication
           skills, enabling students to express themselves accurately and be
           understood by others effectively. Additionally, mastering standard
           pronunciation  aids in overcoming potential  barriers to social
           integration  and fosters a sense of belonging within the English
           language community. In this chapter, you will guide the students
           through pronunciation  using standard English. Thus, you will
           empower students  to  navigate  various  linguistic  contexts  with
           proficiency  and  self-confidence,  thereby  enhancing  their  overall
           language competence and success.



             Activity 1.1        Articulating words and sentences
          Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through
          the seven steps below:

             (a) Pronouncing the words provided and completing the activities
                 that follow using the standard pronunciation provided in
                 brackets  after  each  word.  This  activity  can  be  done  first  in
                 chorus, then by pairs, and individually, with a special focus
                 on the last You may begin teaching this activity by asking the
                 students to pronounce the word and demonstrate the correct
                 pronunciation after them. Assess each student’s pronunciation
                 and correct them where necessary.

             (b) Finding the meaning of all the words in Activity 1.1 (a) and,
                 with each of the words they choose from the list, constructing
