(a) Reading the given sentences aloud paying attention to the
syllables in bold as they indicate the location of word stress.
This is a syllable practice activity. Instruct the students to read
the sentences individually, in pairs, and/or in small groups
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
while paying attention to the syllables in bold. Use the ‘Did you
know’ section and other resources to read about stressed and
unstressed syllables. You are also advised to use various sources
to learn about teaching stressed and unstressed syllables to
students.
(b) Pronouncing the given words, dividing each word into its
syllables and identifying the stressed syllable in words. You may
begin teaching this activity by asking students to pronounce
in chorus each of the words provided in the Student’s Book
and demonstrate the correct pronunciation after them paying
particular attention to the stressed syllables. Then, ask each
student to pronounce each word by placing stress on the correct
syllable. Assess each student’s pronunciation and correct them
where necessary. Ask them to use dictionaries or Internet
sources whenever the need arises. The stressed syllables are
shown in bold as follows:
television dictionary lemonade thermometer
cucumber watermelon hippopotamus opportunity
immediately multiplication
(c) Pronouncing and showing stress in the given words with the
help of a dictionary/Internet source. Begin teaching this
activity by asking students to pronounce in chorus each of
the words provided in the Student’s Book and demonstrate
the correct pronunciation after them while paying attention
to the correct syllables. Then, ask each student to pronounce
each word by placing stress on the stressed syllable. Ask each
student to identify the stressed syllable in the word, and prove
