Activity 1.4 Describing objects, events and situations
Use the activities in the Student’s Book to guide the students through:
(a) Reading carefully the provided sentences and explaining what
emotion each sentence presents after applying appropriate
intonation. This activity focuses on intonation and its influence
in conveying meaning. To begin teaching this activity, instruct
the students to sit in pairs and read carefully each of the
sentences by placing appropriate intonation. Ask them to
explain the meaning of each sentence after placing appropriate
intonation. Instruct them to use the ‘Did you know?’ section
and other resources to learn the concept of intonation and its
influence in conveying meaning.
(b) Reading the passage and studying the sentences with words in
bold. Instruct each student to read the passage in the Student’s
Book and study how the words in bold enhanced the sentences
they are in. After each student has finished reading the passage
and studying the words in bold, instruct them to sit in small
groups to discuss the passage and the words in bold. Ask them
to use the words in bold to write a passage describing a scenario
of their choice. The overall intention of this activity is to enable
the students to use words in different communicative contexts.
(c) Describing images or objects in terms of size, colour, shape,
meaning conveyed, and/or other relevant details with
appropriate intonation. This activity intends to provide the
students with the opportunity to describe images and objects
with appropriate intonation. Prepare relevant teaching aids
