Preface
This textbook, English for Advanced Secondary Schools, Student’s Book Form
Five, has been written specifically for Form Five students in the United Republic of
Tanzania. The book has been prepared following the 2023 English Language Syllabus
for Advanced Secondary Education, Form V-VI, issued by the Ministry of Education,

Science and Technology. Some of the contents in this book have been adapted from
the English for Advanced Secondary Schools Student’s Book Form Five, published
in 2022, following the 2009 Advanced Level Syllabus issued by the then Ministry of
Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT).
The book consists of twelve chapters, namely Standard pronunciation, Vocabulary
development, Grammar and vocabulary, Oral messages, Complex and stylistic meanings,
Managing conversations, Creating a variety of complex oral and written texts, Principles
of interpreting, Principles of translation, Editing and proofreading, Appreciating the
aesthetics and values of literature, and Analysing and appreciating literary genres. The
book contains engaging learning activities and real-life examples that will help you
develop the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In
addition, the book will help you expand your vocabulary through conversation and
reading provided texts that you will use in your everyday communication. You are
also required to prepare a portfolio for keeping records of different activities that you
will be performing in different lessons. This will enable you to review the progress of
your English language learning and help you to reflect on your own objectives, ways
of learning and success. Ultimately, you will successfully be able to express yourself
accurately and fluently in both oral and written English.
