Theatre Arts for Advanced Secondary Schools

Performing for radio involves the art of using one’s voice to engage and entertain
listeners who are tuning in without the benefit of visual cues. Unlike other
performance media, radio relies solely on auditory communication, making it
a unique platform that requires specific techniques to captivate audience. Radio
performers should keep in mind that, the audience will not be able to see the

performance. So, it is important to rely entirely on their voice to convey the
message, emotion and engage the listeners.

            Live radio drama

This is an oldest and traditional way of the broadcasting of radio drama
performances. The performance is done in studio setting and involves actors
and technicians only. The script that guides the performances are sometimes
adopted from stage plays, novels, literary plays or screenplays. One actor could
play different characters. Performances require a high level of coordination and
skill, since there are no second chances for retakes. Today, with technological
advancement, live performances can also be recorded, stored and rebroadcasted.
Live radio drama involves performance practices in which drama is enacted live
from a radio station to a live audience listening to the radio. Figure 4.8 shows a
            live radio drama performance.
