Transitions
Transition is another component of screenplay writing which deals with a
movement of an idea, passage or change from one position, state, stage, subject or
concept to another. Transitions are used within a script to make changes between
scenes. As a writer, these should be added only if the transition is explicitly

integral to the story or plot or if it will be needed to ease directing. The following
are some of the transition descriptors and their meaning or implication when used
in writing scripts.
(a) CUT TO: Indicates the end of one sequence of action and the need for a
new scene and location.
(b) FADE IN: The screen image fades to picture. The first written direction in
every script and especially the first page.
(c) FADE OUT: The screen image fades to black. It is the last direction in the
script. Figure 2.3 further clarifies how the six basic elements inform the
format of a screenplay.
