Academic Communication for Advanced Secondary Schools Introduction

           7. Feedback: Online quizzes and exercises provide instant feedback,
helping students to see their progress and areas where they need
               improvement.
           General Teaching Steps
           FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
This section introduces teaching and learning procedures that focus on
the communicative approach to create stimulating learning environments
that support comprehension, retention, and application of Academic
Communication Skills. Although most of these methods have been
covered during teacher education, you are advised to review them to
refresh your knowledge and ensure a smooth flow during teaching and
learning. Teaching is as much an art as it is a science. Thus, teaching that
emphasises the stages of learning yields better outcomes. While these
procedures offer a solid understanding of how teaching can be carried
out, they are not exhaustive. A teacher must be creative and innovative
to ensure that learning occurs in context and considers learners’ abilities
and disabilities to provide access to education for all students.

           METHODOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
           A Dialogue method

Teaching through dialogue is a highly effective way to engage students
in critical thinking, active learning and critical thinking. A teacher
may use the dialogue method to assist students in learning through the
following steps, which may help you build an interactive and engaging
learning environment that encourages deep comprehension and critical
           thinking abilities through discourse.
           i. Preparing open-ended questions to promote critical thinking and
conversation before the session: These questions should arouse
students’ interest and motivate them to participate by giving their
                 views on the topic.
ii. Creating a supportive classroom climate where students can
freely express their ideas and opinions without fear of judgement:
Encourage active listening, respect for others’ views, and readiness
to accept students’ answers. Tell them that the teacher will provide
                 corrective feedback after their dialogue.
