Introduction Academic Communication for Advanced Secondary Schools

iii. Beginning with a stimulus by introducing a thought-provoking
quotation, image, video clip, or real-life incident relating to the
                 class topic
iv. Ask probing questions to facilitate discussions and encourage

them to explore different perspectives. Act as a facilitator rather
than the instructor to make students speak of their own experience
                 of the topic in discussion.
           v. Forming manageable groups and encouraging collaboration among
students: Let the students speak in the group first before sharing
                 with the class.
vi. Providing scaffolding for students who may struggle to speak in
                 the dialogue.
vii. Using formative assessment approaches including questioning,
observation and peer feedback to evaluate students’ comprehension
and development during the dialogue and summarising key issues
that reinforce understanding of the topic.
           B Discussion Method

This is an interesting and dynamic technique that promotes students’
critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and active engagement. A
teacher may use the following methods to enhance the discussion
           method in teaching:

           i. Select an appropriate topic or notion for discussion. It should
be relevant to the objectives of the lesson. The discussion topic
or notion should employ open-ended and thought-provoking
conversation questions. These questions should stimulate analysis,
appraisal, and synthesis of material rather than just recollection.
ii. Organise classroom seating in a way that will promote discussion.
A circular or semi-circle configuration is generally effective
because it stimulates eye contact and involvement.
iii. Begin by informing students what they are expected to do and
encourage everyone to participate in the discussion. You may give
a quick overview of the topic to ensure that all students have a
                 fundamental comprehension of the subject.
