Note that, music written in staff notation can also be interpreted using solfa or
solfege syllables. The solfa or solfege syllables are a system of syllables used to
represent the musical notes of a scale. These syllables are do re mi fa so la and ti.
When writing a major scale using solfa syllables, the eighth note (do) is marked
with an apostrophe (ꞌ); that is, do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, doꞌ. Figure 3.33 shows how
pitches on a C major scale can be sung using solfa syllables.
