Activity 6.6
Visit your school pea plot(s)/home garden or nearby common pea fields and

perform the following tasks:
1. Soil moisture content:
(a) Check soil moisture by gently pressing your finger into the soil or digging
lightly.
(b) Add mulch if the soil is drying out.
(c) Water the plants gently by using a watering can, only when needed.
2. Monitor the crop plants development by doing the following:
(a) Observe whether the leaves are green or yellow.
(b) Observe whether the plants are growing well or appear weak.
3. Observe and compare the performance of a plot with compost or farmyard
manure and the one without manure.
4. Record your observations and write a report on what you observed and what
you learnt in your portfolio.
Exercise 6.4
1. A farmer planted peas; however, the plants look pale yellow and are not
growing well.
(a) What nutrients might be missing? Suggest what can be done to correct
this problem.
(b) Suggest what should be done before the next cropping season to improve
both the soil and the crop.
2. Your class is managing a pea field. Later, you notice that the soil looks dry
and cracked, and the plants appear weak. You cannot water the whole field
every day. How would you manage water usage efficiently while ensuring the
plants remain healthy?
