Supporting garden peas to grow upright
Garden peas are climbing plants that need support to grow upright, as they cannot
stand on their own. Without support, they may fail to climb and become damaged
or rot. Providing support early, when the plants are 15-20 cm tall, encourages
straight growth, improves air circulation, reduces disease, and simplifies weeding

              and harvesting.

Common support methods for garden peas include staking and trellising. Staking
involves inserting strong sticks next to each plant and tying in a figure-eight
shape (Figure 6.3(a)). This method is ideal for small plots. Trellising is more
suitable for larger fields; it involves placing poles on both sides of a row and
tying horizontal ropes or wires between them (Figure 6.3(b)). The pea plants
climb the ropes with their tendrils. Both methods ensure upright growth, with
support structures that should be firm, evenly spaced, and carefully fixed to avoid
              harming the plants.
