(b) Discuss with farmers, extension officers, or seed sellers about
recommended varieties and how they are sown.
2. Acquire good-quality seeds of common garden and field pea varieties from a
reliable source; then,
(a) Compare by sowing them in selected portions of your school farm.
(b) Monitor, observe and note down the differences between the two types
in terms of:
(i) Growth habit (bushy vs. climbing);
(ii) Plant spacing and arrangement;
(iii) The need for plant support; and
(iv) Difference in management, such as weeding, supporting or
harvesting.
3. Record your findings and lessons learnt in your portfolio.
Exercise 6.3
1. A farmer in Mbeya wants to grow common peas to sell as dry grains. What
type of common pea would you suggest? How can the farmer get the best
variety?
2. Your class tested two garden pea sowing methods in two plots. In one plot,
row-dibbling was used, and in the other plot, broadcasting was used. At seed
emergence, it was observed that the row-dibbled plot grew well, while the
broadcasted plot grew poorly. What may have caused this difference?
3. A farmer planted garden peas in sandy soil with little compost. The plants
grew weak. What soil related-problems may have caused this? What should
be done before the next cropping season?
