Chicken or domestic fowls are widely kept in Tanzania and they will mainly be
learnt in this chapter. There are three types of chicken or domestic fowls which
can be taken into consideration during setting up a chicken enterprise. These are
indigenous or local breeds, dual purpose breeds and exotic breeds (i.e., layers and
broilers) as you have learnt in previous classes on breeds of poultry. Indigenous
chickens are more widely distributed in the country than commercial poultry. Most
farmers opt to keep chickens than other commercial birds. The suitability of the
breed of chickens to keep for eggs or meat will depend on several factors such as
availability of Day-Old Chicks (DOC) and market preferences. It is sometimes hard
to get the DOC of some breeds due to high demand than supply but also there is
always a consumer preference of eggs type, size and colour.
Activity 9.1
In groups, perform the following tasks:
1. By considering the range of poultry species you have learnt in Figures 9.1 (a) to
(l), identify the available entrepreneurial opportunities which you can utilise for
generating income in your area.
2. Summarise your responses and present them in class.
General managerial operations in poultry farming
The management of poultry aims at production of high-quality eggs and meat to
meet the ever-increasing market demand. The managerial practices start from the
DOC up to the point of laying for layers or up to the marketing weight for the
broilers/any species that is kept for meat production. These practices depend on the
type of chicken you are keeping whether layers, broilers or indigenous.
