Experiment 2.2
Investigating reaction time to auditory and visual stimuli

Aim: Measuring and comparing human reaction times to auditory and visual stimuli,
assessing the speed of nervous responses.

Materials
Ruler (30 cm), stopwatch or online reaction timer and volunteer

Procedure (visual stimulus)
1. Ask your volunteer to sit with hands open.
2. Hold the ruler vertically with the 0 cm mark at the top of their fingers as shown
in Figure 2.14.

3. Without warning, release the ruler.
4. Your partner should try to catch it as fast as possible.

5. Record the distance at which the ruler was caught and tabulate your results as
follows.
