Interpreting oral texts
Introduction
Interpretation is a critical thinking skill that means orally transferring data,
content and information from one language to another. Interpreting requires
mastery of language skills together with analysis, and evaluation skills. In
this chapter, you will interpret short, simple conversations or oral texts from
English to Kiswahili and vice versa. The competencies developed will improve
your capacity to promote mutual respect, understanding and cooperation
among the English and Kiswahili speakers.
Think about:
communicating with a person who speaks a language you do not understand.
Activity 1 Explaining the concept and principles of interpretation
Role-play the following scenario and answer the questions that follow.
Maya is a Form One student. She has just arrived at school. Just before the English
orientation course, she fell sick. She wanted to ask for permission from the TOD.
However, there was an obstacle to the TOD: a female teacher on an internship. She
is from the United Kingdom. She doesn’t know Kiswahili. Maya asked her Form
Two friend, Maisha, for assistance. Maya and Maisha thus went to the TOD, and
their conversation was as follows:
Maya: Shikamoo Mwalimu.
Maisha: Good morning, Madam.
TOD: Good morning! How can I help you?
