Task
1. Use online sources to identify informal English greetings. Then, pair up
and role-play interpreting while others listen. Keep exchanging roles until
all have participated.
2. Imagine you are a professional interpreter working at an airport. Then,
comes a foreigner who wants to cancel a flight. The traveller knows English
only, whereas the travel agent can only communicate in Kiswahili. Practise
English/Kiswahili interpreting of the conversations between the traveller
and the agent while others listen.
3. Imagine you are at home with your father. Suddenly, a foreigner knocks
on the door. He is welcomed and gets seated. Unfortunately, he struggles
to express his needs as he cannot communicate in Kiswahili. He knows
English only, whereas your father can only communicate in Kiswahili.
Given your excellent command of both languages, you decide to interpret
the conversation between the parties. Role-play this scenario in a group,
with one being the interpreter, and another being the father and the third
being the foreigner. The rest of the class should listen to the conversation
as they wait for their turn.
