Exercise


               1.  Choose one poem you have read in class. In a well-organised written
                  essay of about 300–400 words:
          FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
                  (a)  Identify key societal norms or beliefs that the poem addresses.
                  (b)  Explain how the poem either challenges or reinforces these norms or
                       beliefs.
                  (c)  Support your explanation with specific evidence from the poem.
                  (d)  Reflect on how the poem’s message relates to your own community
                       or context.
               2.  Reread one poem that has made a strong impression on you.  Write a
                  reflective essay of 300–400 words, addressing the following:
                  (a)  What central issue(s) does the poem raise?
                  (b)  How did reading the poem change your thinking, feelings,
                       or awareness about the issue?
                  (c)  Relate the poem to any personal experiences, beliefs,
                       or observations from your life or society.
                  (d)  What new questions or thoughts did the poem leave you with?

           (b) Read a selected play and answer the following questions.
               1.  Do the problems and challenges which the characters encounter in the text
                   exist in your society? Give reasons.
               2.  How do characters respond to problems and challenges they encounter in
                   the text?
               3.  In what ways does the text challenge today’s societal norms/beliefs?
               4.  How relevant are the topics covered in the text?
               5.  How relevant are the events represented in the text?
               6.  How might the themes and issues explored in this text relate to your own
                   experiences or the world around you?
               7.  Has the text influenced or changed your perspective and understanding of
                   things? Explain.


           Revision

           1.  With evidence from two poems, relate the cultural issues represented to real-
               life experiences.
           2.  Examine the political context presented in one play read in class and compare
               it with the current political situation.
