Listening for comprehension involves the ability to accurately interpret and
understand spoken language. In this chapter, you will discuss, respond to
and make comments on various oral messages. The competencies developed
will enable you to follow conversations, understand instructions, and engage
effectively in real-life communications.

Activity 1 Discussing information from various oral sources

(a) Listen as the teacher reads Text. Then, discuss the following comprehension
questions.

1. What is the passage about?
2. What is the speaker’s attitude towards the topic?
3. How do people reach consensus during a discussion?
4. How was the African continent divided among the imperialist nations?
5. How can you distinguish a discussion from a negotiation?

(b) Listen as the teacher reads Text B. Then, discuss the following comprehension
questions.

1. What is the passage about?
2. What have been the recent reports about women?
